   first teaching pro in Rochester, highest ranking, 3rd in the world in the 30+ for two straight years, multiple

   northeast age group (champion 30+ 35+)

+Trying to make cycling the third sport to be an elite athlete (Masters)

 

Cycling Experience:  

+Took up cycling at the age of 54 after having double hip replacement, so relatively new to this

  sport and learning every season and feel blessed that I can have fun and success at my age in a new sport,

  and meet great people.  

 

Cycling Highlights:  

+ 9 National, North American, or World Titles and 6 more podium finishes in the same, hope to have total of 20+  by the time the season is over

since taking up cycling at age 54, (2003), and then racing a year later have won about 115  races/hill climbs + about 85 podium finishes for a total of about 200 so hope to have healthy  year and either win or get podium finishes to get close to 225

+ Winning National Senior Games RR and TT in 2015 - finally! National Championships!

+ Breaking my own age group record at Mt. Washington by over 4 minutes and doing a 1:09:26 and placing 35th    overall out of over 535 riders completed...so lowered old age group record by over 11 minutes in past 2 years

+ Breaking the 65+ age group record in 2014 by over 6+ minutes at Mt. Washington, the toughest paved hill

   climb in N. America (Samuel's Book rates it #1)

+ Winning 60-69 age group record for 4th time, first 4 time winner of this event, and first ever to set records at      every climb entered and set record for biggest winning margin ever :)

+ Becoming a Cat 2 racer at the age of 65.

+ Becoming N.Y.S. Road Race Champ , 55+, at the age of 56 after buying my first bike 2 years earlier.

+ Having won the N.Y.S. RR Championships in my age group every year I raced in them since 2005, except

   2008 and 2012 when injured.

+ Winning the 60+ overall championships in the www.hillclimbseries.com which includes all the major climbs

   in the northeast, 4 out of first 6 years they have had it, injured one year and 2nd the other by 2.5 points out of

   475, setting the age group record at Mt. Washington, Whiteface, Mt. Equinox, and Mt. Greylock.

+ Being mostly a climber and hilly road race specialist, but then winning the 60+ N.Y.S. Criterium 

   Championships in 2010 and 2011, injured in 2012.

+ Placing 8th in my first National Masters Championships at age 60.

+ 5th in 2014 at Nationals, died on 7,000 elevation finish, never acclimated to elevation :(

+ Took up Time Trialing in 2014 and best overall times at NYS Senior Games in 10K and 5K for all age groups,

   and won NYS TT Championships and 2nd at Jon Duchaeu TT losing to World Cyclo Cross champ  by 5 secs.

+ Breaking my leg June 7th, 2012 and coming back 11 weeks later to win the West Virginia State RR

   Championships over 2 former top 10 national age group finishes in a 100K race thru the mountains of WV.

+ Starting the first ever Masters only (50+) racing team in New York State (With Mark Renzi, president, New

   York  Print and Finishing Systems)

+ Meeting a lot of great people through the cycling world and being a member of a great local club: GVCC

   Racing

+ Winning 2013 NYS, Conn, and WV Road Race Championships (60+) by an average time of 6 minutes

+ Winning 2013 New England Road Race Championships by almost 7 minutes in 60+, 2014 by over 3 minutes

+ Winning Mt Washington Climb 2013, both July and August, and by over 6 minutes in the premier August

   climb

+In 2014 only one to set an age group record (about 20 different categories) by over 6 1/2 minutes

 

Recent Life Highlights:

+ The birth of my 3 grandchildren

+ Starting my life over in many ways at the age of 53 after double hip replacement, taking up a new sport, and starting a new business, and buying a new house...

 

Hobbies:  

I started and own a high end residential home improvement and painting company which is now busy year round, train year round, race locally most Tues nights, 15-20+ weekends travel out of-town for races, have three kids, (grown, but still take time), 3 grand kids, my best buddy, my dog Morgan, family, a house to  take care of...who has time for anything else like hobbies!  My hobby is my life.


2017


Goals

  • since buying a $600 bike at the young age of 54, (2003), and then racing a year later have won about 115 road races/hill climbs/time trials/criteriums + about 85 podium finishes for a total of about 200 so hope to have healthy year and either win or get podium finishes to get close to 225
  • 9 National, North American, or World Titles and 6 more podium finishes in the past 3 years, for 15 total, hope to have total of 20+ by the time the season is over
  • Enjoy riding, traveling, meeting new people, and staying internally motivated to always be better and have a lot of fun with this sport

Mt. Washington is rated #1 Hill Climb in the U.S., Mt. Equinox is #7, and Whiteface is #14.

 

2009 Highlights:

  • Finally a season with no crashes or injuries...2008 was enough for 3-4 years!
  • Top 10 Ranking GVCC Giro Series (Rochester Spring series of races)
  • First ever Nationals, last 3 years missed due to injuries/crashes...finished 9th
  • Won 2 age groups at NYS RR Championships
  • Won Bear Mountain RR by about 25 minutes
  • Attempted the inagural Northeast Hill Climb series in New England and best the locals on their own mountains...won the overall 60 category and a top 15 overall finish out of almost 1,000 climbers who attemped these climbs...
  • 1st/Set age group record by over 3 minutes at Equinox Hill Climb, Vermont (rated 7th toughest hill climb in the country)
  • 1st/Set age group record by almost 3 minutes at Whiteface Hill Climb
  • 1st Newtons Revenge: 60 (Mount Washington Hill Climb - rated #1 hill climb in the country) in first attempt
  • 2nd: Allen Clarke Hill Climb: 60 (Vermont)
  • 2nd: Ascutney Hill Climb: 60 (Vermont)
  • 2nd: Burke Mountain Hill Climb: 60 (Vermont)
  • Only RR loses were in the final sprint against all nationally ranked riders
  • Finished season ranked 9th in the 60-64 age category, and 2nd in NYS...(USCF Rankings)

2008 Highlights:

  • Top 10 ranking in GVCC March Giro Series
  • 3rd Jiminy Peak RR, Massachusetts  (55 )
  • 1st Bristol RR, Bristol, N. Y.  (55 )
  • 1st Whiteface Hill Climb, Whiteface, N.Y.  (50 )
  • 2nd Three Villages Tour RR, Baltic, Ct. (55 )
  • Bad crash at race and freak Archilles heel injury 6 weeks later kept me sidelined for 3 months, (June-August), then crash at Three Villages Tour RR, mid Sept., broke collarbone and out again for rest of season! 

2007 Highlights:

  • Repeated as New York State Road Race Champion in 55
  • 2nd in two major hill climb races
  • Seven, top 3 finishes in races in throughout the northeast
  • Helped to originate/organize NYPS/LightSpec Master's 50 team!
  • No Major Crashes!
